Calculating Your Savings

Calculating Your Savings

I had someone ask how to calculate their savings using the Publix receipt, so I thought I would give a couple of examples. The Publix receipt can be a little confusing if you’re just starting out with using coupons. But I love their receipts because you can see exactly what you saved using manufacturer (vendor) coupons, store coupons, and price savings (like B1G1 specials).

Last night I shopped for this week’s sales (finally!) and here is what my receipt looks like at the bottom:

To calculate the savings, I add what was spent (circled in green) to what was saved (circled in red).

43.03 + 166.36 = 209.39 Value of Items Purchased

Then I divide my savings by the value to see the percentage of  what was saved:

166.36 / 209.39 = .79449… or  79%

This was a great shopping trip for me!  I plan to go back today to pick up a few more items that were out of stock (or get a few rainchecks!)

I also wanted to show a smaller shopping receipt, so Laura let me use hers.

To calculate my savings, I add what was spent (circled in green) to what was saved (circled in red).

13.99 + 46.01 = 60.00 Value of Items Purchased

Then I divide the savings by the value to see the percentage of what was saved:

46.01 / 60.00 = .7668… or  77%
